Laura Laker is a freelance journalist, author and speaker specialising in cycling and urban transport. She has written for a variety of national and specialist publications, from the Guardian, to Bloomberg’s CityLab, to road.cc, and others. Her column features in each month’s Cycling Plus magazine.

In 2024 her first book, Potholes and Pavements - a bumpy ride on Britain’s National Cycle Network, was published by Bloomsbury.

Laura co-hosts the popular podcast, Streets Ahead, with Adam Tranter and Ned Boulting. She has interviewed everyone from academics and professionals, to activists and prison workers - as well as the Secretary of State for Transport.

In 2021 Laura led on the publication of the UK’s first Road Collision Reporting Guidelines, setting out best practice for the media and professionals to talk about road crashes, their prevention and aftermath. She has since won funding to continue this work, thanks to the Foundation for Integrated Transport’s Alastair Hanton memorial fund.

She has spoken at the London Walking and Cycling Conference, as well as Party Conference fringe events, cycling events and webinars with international audiences, as a speaker, panellist and interviewer.

When not working, she might be found on her bike, swing dancing, walking or, more recently, attempting to play the guitar.
